Commonly mispronounced words 1
In today’s practice session, you’re going to work on some commonly mispronounced words. Listen to the audio and repeat the words after me. Remember that English is not a phonetic language and learning proper pronunciation is crucial if you want to be understood by others. Sometimes wrong pronunciation can lead to some great misunderstanding, and we don’t want that, do we? Remember to be consistent and accept that you won’t necessarily improve overnight. Practice intentionally; don’t just go with the flow and let your old habits take over. A perfect routine would be to practice every day for 5-10 minutes. I’m sure you’ll find the time if you make it your priority! Just plan it beforehand and put it in your calendar; also, remember to set an alarm. ⏰
Don’t worry about the weird symbols under the words – it’s the International Phonetic Transcription that will help you understand American English pronunciation – later on you’ll learn everything you need to know about it.
NOTICE how we read the ending -able. The suffix -able /əbəl/ is used to form an adjective that means „possible, capable of”. Breakable – easy to break
It may be confused with the adjective “able” where the pronunciation is totally different. ABLE (adj.) – having skills/ opportunity/ power to do something
